DT-GEO

Mission

The Digital Twin of Geophysical Extremes (DT-GEO) project develops a prototype for a digital twin on geophysical extremes aiming to analyse better and forecast tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. DT-GEO's expertise in modeling geophysical processes and extreme events creates a more comprehensive approach to understanding Earth's complex systems.

A key aspect of the collaboration between BioDT and DT-GEO has been the joint effort to develop a shared glossary of digital twin concepts and definitions. This initiative has strengthened the understanding of terms across projects, fostering a common language that facilitates better communication and interoperability between the two digital twin systems.

The projects have also engaged in joint communication activities, including co-organising sessions at scientific conferences such as the European Open Science Cloud Symposium. These efforts have showcased the strengths of each project and highlighted the potential synergies between biodiversity and geophysical modeling.

Cooperation between BioDT and DT-GEO

BioDT and DT-GEO have been exploring the development of cross-project use cases that demonstrate the interconnectedness of biodiversity and geophysical phenomena. These use cases aim to show how extreme geophysical events can impact biodiversity, and conversely, how changes in biodiversity might influence geophysical processes.

The collaboration extends to technical aspects as well, with both projects working towards aligning their high-level architectural views. This alignment is crucial for ensuring that the digital twins can effectively exchange data and information, paving the way for more integrated Earth system modeling.

Looking ahead, BioDT and DT-GEO are planning joint publications to reflect on common challenges and shared approaches to user engagement. They are also considering the social and economic impacts of their digital twins, recognising the broader implications of their work beyond the scientific community.
