From 14th to 18th November 2022, the Biological Research Station at Finse hosted a course on Open, Reproducible, and Transparent Science in Ecology. A collaborative effort between BioCEED (University of Bergen), GBIF Norway, and Living Norway, the course boasted a great lineup of teachers from NINA, NTNU, UiO, and UiB. Designed for Ph.D. students, the five-day course delivered hands-on training, imparting essential skills and knowledge in Open Science, data management, data standards, and reproducible workflows. The event drew participants from diverse backgrounds, ranging from Scandinavia to Asia.
Empowering Future Scientists: Open Science Course at Finse Draws International Participation
During the course, attendees gained insights into the significance of GBIF, Darwin Core data standards, and the prerequisites for achieving FAIR data standards.
Led by esteemed instructors from GBIF, NINA, NTNU, UiO, and UiB, the course went beyond theoretical discussions. Students, representing a spectrum of nationalities, immersed themselves in practical applications—coding, data collection, and understanding the nuances of metadata. Notably, the curriculum placed a strong emphasis on utilizing tools such as quarto, git/GitHub, and targets for building reproducible workflows.
The course wasn't confined to the classroom; it ventured into the realm of frozen species recording, emphasizing the need for meticulous data collection and the recording of metadata surrounding the data.
The success of the Finse Open Science Course exemplifies the power of international collaboration in shaping the future landscape of ecological research.
