The BioDT project will be featured at the Science Summit for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in New York City, with several project representatives presenting at a dedicated workshop on September 26, 2024.

Science Summit for the UN SDGs

The Science Summit, set to take place from September 10th to September 27th, 2024, coincides with the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) and aims to showcase the crucial role of science in achieving the UN SDGs and Agenda 2030. This hybrid event, offering both online and in-person sessions, builds on the success of the previous year's summit, which featured 400 sessions, 1,700 speakers, and attracted 12,000 attendees.

The 2024 event promises to be even more impactful, exploring the necessary policy, regulatory, and financial environments to support and sustain global scientific collaborations across continents, nations, and themes. A key focus will be on data-enabled approaches to science, research, and development, which are essential for achieving the SDGs.

Transforming Knowledge into Practice: Science, Technology and Innovation in Support of the UN SDGs

As part of this summit, a network of European organisations is organising the workshop where BioDT will be presented, focusing on biodiversity and digital technologies. This workshop entitled "Transforming Knowledge into Practice: Science, Technology and Innovation in Support of the UN SDGs" brings together active communities from the biodiversity, ecology, and engineering domains, aiming to strengthen science, technology, and innovation efforts towards the SDGs. The workshop will showcase various European initiatives, including the BioDT project, European Research Infrastructures, the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), and academic publishers.

The workshop's agenda is divided into two parts. The morning session will feature presentations from network members on their collective contribution to SDG implementation. Gabriela Zuquim will present the Biodiversity Digital Twin project, highlighting its innovative approaches to biodiversity conservation and management. Other presentations will cover topics such as EU Digital Twin projects, EOSC initiatives, and the role of Research Infrastructures in supporting the SDGs.

The afternoon session will involve international and regional stakeholders discussing their expectations from participating science and technology organisations. This workshop aims to demonstrate how digital twin technology and other innovative approaches can revolutionise our understanding and protection of biodiversity, aligning with the broader goals of sustainable development.

The organisers will also issue an open call to forge an international alliance to further integrate biodiversity conservation into the post-SDG agenda. This aligns with the summit's objective of creating conditions for more effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Attendees of the Science Summit can expect a dynamic and transformative experience, with opportunities to engage with global scientific leaders, experts, and innovators across various fields. As the world faces unprecedented challenges, from climate change to technological disruptions, this summit stands as a critical platform for shaping the future of scientific collaboration and its role in achieving sustainable development.
