Building Digital Twins : The BioDT Experience

Join us for the BioDT School and Hackathon and become the pioneer of the Digital Twins Research!

We are excited to invite you to the BioDT School and Hackathon, which will take place from March 3-7, 2025, at the heel of Italian Peninsula – in the city of Lecce, Italy. This unique event is designed for students, early-career researchers, and professionals interested in unlocking skills in digital modelling, and interested in latest innovation practices in biodiversity.

Whether you are new to the concept of Digital Twins or looking to deepen your knowledge, this is the perfect opportunity to engage with leading experts and learn how digital twins are developed, especially through the lenses of BioDT use cases. Register for the BioDT School and Hackathon today!

What is BioDT?

The Biodiversity Digital Twin (BioDT) project is at the forefront of creating Digital Twins (DTs) for biodiversity. A Digital Twin is a virtual model of real-world entities and ecosystems, enabling detailed simulation and analysis. BioDT uses cutting-edge technologies like High-Performance Computing (HPC), FAIR data principles, and open APIs to model biodiversity in unprecedented ways. This approach helps predict biodiversity trends, inform conservation strategies, and support sustainable development.

Why Attend the BioDT School and Hackathon?

This five-day event offers four days of intensive learning followed by a one-day Hackathon. You will dive deep into the BioDT project and gain hands-on experience in developing Digital Twins.

Here’s what you can expect:

Agenda

Day 1 - Monday, March 3rd, 2025

· An introduction to the concept and components of Digital Twins, covering the process, steps, and lessons learned from BioDT’s use cases.
· Explore the platform developed by the BioDT team, which demonstrates how DTs can be applied to biodiversity challenges.

Day 2 - Tuesday, March 4th, 2025

· Learn how to transform scientific research and models into technical tools.
· Get acquainted with data management through DOI data citation and data APIs, as well as bioRIs.

Day 3 - Wednesday, March 5th, 2025

· Gain insight into how models are scaled up using BioDT's High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure.
· In addition, the focus will be on FDOs (FAIR Digital Objects) and RO-Crate, understanding how to utilise data that is easily discoverable and reusable.

Day 4- Thursday, March 6th, 2025

· Delve into the technical side of building Digital Twins, with a focus on GUI development and the building blocks required to create effective, reusable components.
· You’ll also have a first look at BioDT’s prototype platforms, providing feedback for the available use cases.

Day 5 - Friday, March 7th, 2025

Put theory into practice! Teams will work together to develop solutions using the BioDT platform, focusing on real-world biodiversity challenges. The Hackathon is your chance to collaborate, innovate, and develop a roadmap for your own set of digital twins.

Who Should Join?

The BioDT School and Hackathon is open to anyone interested in learning about Digital Twins and their application in biodiversity research. Whether you are a student, a researcher, a developer, or simply a biodiversity enthusiast, this event will provide valuable skills and experiences to help you contribute to the future of digital biodiversity modeling. Given its programme structure, we are only able to include a maximum of  20 eligible students.

Upon webform registration, selected students who apply by 17 January 2025 will have their travel, lodging, food and programme expenses covered. Students, who apply after 17 January 2025, are still welcome to submit their application; however, there may be restrictions on the coverage of travel and lodging expenses.

Please note only the selected students will be informed upon registration form evaluation.
